Words of Knowledge (Spirit of Truth Part 8)

The Gift of the Word of Knowledge is Knowing God’s Heart for the World

The Holy Spirit is often described in a variety of ways in Scripture, but in John 16:13 (ESV), Jesus gives one of the most profound introductions: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” Jesus names the Holy Spirit the Spirit of truth—a name that unites both the spiritual and scriptural, the supernatural and the grounded truth of God’s word.

This unity matters deeply, especially when we talk about the spiritual gift known as the “word of knowledge.” Often misunderstood or overlooked, this gift carries immense potential for building up the body of Christ and bringing the kingdom of God into our everyday lives.

What Is the Word of Knowledge?

In 1 Corinthians 12:8 (ESV), Paul writes: “For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit…” The Greek word translated “utterance” is logos, meaning a word that is spoken—something active, alive, and revealed.

The word of knowledge is not simply information. It is a Spirit-given revelation, spoken out loud, for the purpose of building up others and making known the heart of God in a specific moment. It is not given for our retention but for release—bringing God's insight into situations of confusion, pain, or doubt.

We Live in the “Now and Not Yet” Kingdom

There’s no denying we live in uncertain times. From societal challenges to global conflicts, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. But as believers, we are part of a kingdom that has already come and is still coming. Jesus brought the kingdom of God to earth, and though all creation may not yet recognize it, we live in that new reality now.

In 1 Corinthians 2:10-12 (ESV), Paul reminds us: “These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God… we have received… the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.”

We are not left to face the unknown alone. Through the Spirit, we have access to the thoughts of God (1 Corinthians 2:16), who calls us friends (John 15:15). And this access is not just for comfort—it is also for action.

A Story of Jesus and the Word of Knowledge

John 4 recounts a striking example of this gift in action. When Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at the well, he tells her, “You have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband.” (John 4:18, ESV). She is shocked, not only by his knowledge but also by his mercy. In that moment, Jesus doesn’t condemn her—he reveals himself to her.

Her response? She runs into the town proclaiming, “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” (John 4:29, ESV). A whole village was impacted because one woman encountered a Savior who knew her completely and loved her anyway.

Practicing the Gift Today

This gift is not only for a few—it’s available to all who follow Jesus. Scripture encourages us to seek the gifts (1 Corinthians 14:1), but even more, to seek the Giver.

How can we grow in the word of knowledge?

  1. Seek It
Not just the gift, but the Giver. Spend time with God. Know His heart. Read His word. The more we know Him, the more we will understand His voice.

  2. Posture Yourself to Receive
Pride can block our ability to receive. Humility opens the door. When we admit our need for God’s wisdom, He is faithful to give it (James 1:5).

  3. Practice It
Whether in the workplace, at the store, or among friends—ask God, “Is there something You want to say here?” Step out with boldness and humility. It might sound strange, but it could open a heart to the love of Jesus.

There are even documented testimonies of prayer groups working alongside law enforcement to find missing children through prophetic insight and the word of knowledge. When believers walk in step with the Spirit, real-world impact follows.

A Gift That Reveals, Extends, and Heals

This gift isn’t about spiritual prestige. It’s about revealing the nature of God, extending His mercy, and releasing His healing—both in our city and to the ends of the earth. It’s a gateway to ministry, a window into the heart of God, and an invitation into deeper friendship with Jesus.
